Rules

S.S.F. Shetland League Rules
• GOAL: All players will be taught fielding, throwing, and batting while being introduced to the fundamentals of baseball, good sportsmanship, and safety precautions.
• GAME: All games will start on time and last only 90 minutes, about 3 innings.
• COACHES: Coaches are allowed to be on the playing field when their team is on defense (5 coaches) and on the bases when their team is batting (4 coaches).
• BATTING: The batting tee is placed on homeplate. The ball must be hit at least ten feet to be in play; otherwise it is a “dead ball”. There are no strikeouts, bunts, or walks. If the bat is thrown, the batter is declared out after one warning.
• PITCHING: During the second half of the season ONLY, coaches will pitch to their players. If the ball is not put into play after the third pitch, the ball MUST be placed on the batting tee. However, if the third pitch is hit foul, one more pitch is allowed.
• RUNNERS: Base runners may advance only one base on a hit to the infield. Doubles, triples, and homeruns are allowed only on hits to the outfield. Base stealing or leading is not allowed. Sliding is permitted, but not encouraged.
• OFFENSE: All players will bat every inning. If there’s an out, the runner must leave the base. Teams will announce their “ last batter”. The last batter is the “ Homerun Hitter” and will run all the bases until crossing homeplate safely, while outs can still be made on the other base runner(s). Runs and outs are not totaled.
• DEFENSE: All players will play every inning. It is recommended that the positions be rotated every inning.Every player needs to play every position.

° Infield positions: first, second, and third base, shortstop, and pitcher. (The coach at home will act as the catcher, if there is a play at the plate.)

° Outfield positions: left, center, and right field.

(Extra players will be positioned in the outfield between these positions.)

• Shetland Guidelines (Game Time – 1:30 minutes, about 3 innings)

° The Shetland League focuses totally on the instruction of beginning players:

  • • Proper way to hold and swing a bat
  • • Proper way to throw a bal
  • • Proper way to catch a ball
  • • Basic game of baseball with safety in mind

° Fielding:

  • • Players will not be positioned in the basepaths.
  • • Players will stay in their fielding positions (first base, second base, third base, shortstop, pitcher; and all extra players are in the outfield).
  • • Proper way to catch a ball
  • • All outfield play should go to second base.

° Hitting:

  • • All batters and runners will wear a batting helmet.
  • • Coaches should make sure defense is set and ready.

° Running:

  • • Batters must run through the orange bag at first base.
  • • The first baseman will only tag the white base.
  • • Runners should have only one foot on base.

° Coaches:

  • • Coaches on the field may direct opposing runners to the next base.
  • • Always be positive and encouraging.

° Sportsmanship:

  • • Players will not tease or make fun of other players.
  • • If a player is caught teasing, that player will sit out the rest of the inning.
  • • Remember that the game is for the children and not the adults.

 

S.S.F. Pinto League Rules
• Game Time – 1:45 minutes or 5 innings)

° The Pinto League focuses totally on the instruction of beginning/intermediate players

  • • Proper way to hold a bat and swing
  • • More advanced baseball skills
  • • More advanced game of baseball with safety in mind

° Fielding

  • • There will be 10 players on the field during each inning which includes a 4th outfielder
  • • The fielding pitcher will wear a helmet and a protective vest while on the field. (up to coaches discretion)
  • • The catcher will wear full catchers gear including the face mask
  • • Player playing catcher, must be experienced and prepared

° Hitting

  • • All batters and runners will wear a batting helmet
  • • Each player will receive 5 pitches; the last pitch must be fair or the player is out
  • • One foul allowed on last pitch
  • • NO BIG BARREL BATS

° Running

  • • Batters may round the bases
  • • Runners should have only one foot on base
  • • Runners may not leave the bag until contact with the ball has been made.
  • • No stealing or leading off the bag
  • • Must avoid contact on a close play

° Coaches

  • • The hitting teams’ coaches should be stationed at first base, third base, home plate and at the pitching machine
  • • Always be positive and encouraging

° Each inning will consist of 3 outs or 7 runs per inning

° Sportsmanship:

  • • Players will not tease other players
  • • If a player is caught teasing or using any distasteful language, that player will sit out the rest of the game
  • • All players and coaches will shake the hands of the opposing team after the game

° General:

  • • Play is considered over when the ball is returned to the coach pitching or time out is called

• Catcher’s rule – when there are 2 outs please pinch run for the catcher (last batter out pinch runs)

 

S.S.F. Mustang League Rules
• (Game Time –7 innings or 2 hour time limit, home team must have their last ups)

° The Mustang League focuses totally on the instruction of intermediate players

  • • More advanced baseball skills
  • • More advanced game of baseball with safety in mind

° Fielding

  • • There will be 10 players on the field during each inning which includes a 4th outfielder who must play in an outfield position (on the grass)
  • • The fielding pitcher is to be located within the pitching circle until the ball is hit (protective gear is up to coaches discretion)
  • • The catcher will wear full catchers gear including the face mask

° Hitting

  • • Starting in week 1 each team will have player pitching for the first 3 innings, then coach pitch
  • • Each pitcher cannot pitch more than 5 innings a week (if pitcher throws only one pitch in an inning it is considered a full inning pitched)
  • • All batters and runners will wear a batting helmet
  • • The umpire/coach will pitch from the pitching rubber
  • • NO BIG BARREL BATS

° Running

  • • Batters may round first base
  • • Runners should have only one foot on base
  • • No stealing
  • • Runners can only advance on contact or a walk
  • • Sliding is only allowed on a close play
  • • There is no charging a player
  • • If a player does charge another player they will be ejected from the game and suspended for one game

° Coaches

  • • The hitting teams’ coaches should be stationed at first and third base only. (pitching machine is optional)
  • • Always be positive and encouraging

° Sportsmanship

  • • Players will not tease other players
  • • If a player is caught teasing or making distasteful comments, that player will sit out the rest of the game
  • • All players and coaches will shake the hands of the opposing team after the game

° Each inning will consist of 3 outs or 5 runs per inning, except the 6th inning runs are unlimited

° Games will start at their scheduled time

° Teams must arrive no less than 15 minutes before their scheduled time

° If the game prior runs over, there will be no infield allowed

° Bases will be 60 feet apart
